How Not To Cry When Chopping Onions

STORY WRITTEN BY:

Not only heartbreaks and tear-jerking films manage us to get on the edge of our seats and make us put out our tissue rolls and make us cry. There is another known specie on this world that can eventually make us shed some tears—and they are onions. Chopping onions, for some unavoidable reason, can get our eyes into tears without actually knowing it. And for the fact that it constantly make our eyes shed tears, it’s best to know how to conquer these little bullies whenever we chop them.

USE A VERY SHARP KNIFE
. It is important to use a very sharp knife to chop onions so it would not squeeze its juices which releases some chemical irritant that make the glands of our eyes release tears.

CHEW ON SOME GUM. Chewing a gum while chopping onions prevents tears because it forces you to breathe through your mouth. It breaks down the irritant into smaller amount when it reaches the glands in the eye that gets irritated by the enzymes produced by the onion.

DIP THE ONION IN WATER
. Dipping the onion in water every now and then reduces the production of irritant enzymes of onions as it washes them off into the water. Not only does it eliminate the tears, it also brings out the true flavors of the onions.

SWITCH ON A COOLING FAN. The cooling fan blows off the irritant gases and enzymes brought forth by the onions, causing them to fly on a different direction rather than to your eyes.

LIGHT A CANDLE.
Light a candle while chopping onions. The fire of the candle needs oxygen and it sucks the air around its area, thus including the enzymes produced by the onions.

And here are some tips and solutions on how to reduce the “crying moments” while chopping onions. Do this next time and see if everything works out for you. Happy cooking!
